Day 152 - Porcupine on the PCT. 2564.3 (22.4)

Kevin Silvernale November 26, 2017

It was primarily a solo day, except when I walked around a corner to find a Porcupine on the trail.  I;d stop to figure out what to do and decided a video was in order.  I was super nervous as there was no way I'd outrun it with my backpack on and while shooting a video.  In hind sight, I've never heard of someone being attacked or chased by a Porcupine.  Still having one or many of those barbs stuck in my leg for 2 days and many miles didn't sound like a good time at all.

I continued to follow it for 10 minutes or so, and shortly after its encounter, I'd stop to eat lunch.  It was a sunny warm day, so I look my time and soaked in the ray while enjoying a pretty epic view.

As I approached camp, the forest became pretty dense and it seemed to become dark well before it had previous days.  It could be, that for the first time, I'm noticing the shorter end-of-summer days.  When I arrived at camp, two tents were already set up.  I recognized one as being See-foo's and the other looked way to large to be any thru-hiker (no pictures, it was just too dark).  Both of them were silent in there tents.  I liked the idea of calling it early today.

Tomorrow I'd like to get up early to catch the morning bus into Stehekin and their famous bakery!

Passed the "Less than 100 Miles to go" mark today.

Day 151 - Greatness Through Glacier Peaks Wilderness - Part 2. 2541.9 (23.7)

Kevin Silvernale November 23, 2017

I couldn't have asked for a better sunrise.  Though I was one of the first out of their tent at Mica Lake, I took my time and many pictures while enjoying a couple cups of coffee.  In classic Sunshine fashion, I was the last to pack up and leave.

As with any day on trail that is littered with many views, I took many breaks to enjoy them.  Being decently fit, I was able to still make just under 24 miles before setting up camp.  It was dark by the time arrived, hence no pictures of this night.

Camp would be at Miner's Creek with See-Foo and Clinic, hikers I'd met previously at White Pass and again at Snoqualmie Pass.  It was nice to eat dinner with familiar faces.

Day 150 - Greatness through Glacier Peaks Wilderness - Part 1. 2518.2 (22.5)

Kevin Silvernale November 20, 2017

I'm writing this over 400 days after Day 150 and 151, and they still sticks out to me as very memorable days.

After days of cloudy, rainy and cold conditions, the sun finally started to break through this morning.  Having stopped nearly 10 miles sooner than the rest of the group yesterday (the group planned a 30 for yesterday; I'd later find out they all made it!), I was on my own and content to be so.

Throughout the day I saw very few hikers and enjoyed many occasions of the sun breaking through the clouds.  I stopped and soaked in the rays for as long as they'd stick around.  I wasn't on a schedule, I knew I wasn't going to be able to catch anyone I knew ahead of me.  So I spent a lot of time listening to music and reflecting on how far I'd come.  Especially as I crossed the 2500 Mile mark today!

Near the end of today, I met Slingshot, who was struggling with some tight muscles in his leg.  He'd be one of 3 other hikers I'd walk to the Canadian Boarder with.

With my intent to enjoy the last week or so of being on trail, I spent a extra time talking with the hikers I did see, gathering water and taking in the views.  In my journal I wrote, "I feel very comfortable out here" and I knew when it was all over, I wouldn't be done with it.

Day 148 - Nero Out of Skykomish. 2476.1 (14.5)

Kevin Silvernale November 16, 2017

My morning consisted of me trying to dry my sleeping bag out; throughout the night under the bridge, water began dripping near me and the splash ended up getting my sleeping bag wet.

My mom mailed my resupply and a heavier coat which I anticipated needing as the time of year has come for the Northern Cascades to possibly see snow.  I checked the forecast and figured the weather would hold for at least the next week.  So I sent the warm jacket back home along with some supplies I didn't need for the last two legs of this adventure.

Before leaving town, I stopped in at a small deli and had a delicious hot sandwich for lunch.  Not entirely done eating, a gentleman was giving another hiker a ride to the trail at Stevens Pass and wanted to know if I needed one too.  Of course I said yes, shoveling the rest of the sandwich down and quickly packing up my gear.

Back at the trail around 2:00 pm, I knew it would be a challenge to get to camp before dark.  The group I'd been hiking with planned on camping at the top of a mountain, roughly 15 miles in for the day.  It's one of the few good mountain tops along the trail where it is possible to camp comfortably and I wanted to make it there.

As the darkness encroached and I was almost to the top of the mountain, fog and mist created a coolness that had me looking for a good place to stop if conditions got worse.  Fortunately they did not and I was able to join the group as we all sat out in the misty fog for dinner.
